Use this quick chart to compare realistic targets before entering a precise time above. The halfway column assumes even pacing; a deliberate negative split should be only slightly slower through 5K, not a large time deficit to rescue late.

How to use the result

A useful target survives the middle kilometres.

Start from recent evidence

A 10K target should connect to a recent race, threshold workout or repeatable training pace. A 50-minute 10K requires about 8:03 per mile or 5:00 per kilometre. A 45-minute target requires about 7:15 per mile or 4:30 per kilometre. If that pace is already unsustainable in controlled training, the calculator has revealed an assumption—not solved it.

Check the first and fifth kilometres

Use kilometre one to avoid spending energy on an opening surge. Use the 5K split to judge whether the target remains available without forcing the pace. GPS pace can jump on turns or under trees, so elapsed checkpoint time is often a steadier reference.

Adjust for the course

The math assumes an even course and continuous running. Hills, wind, heat, congestion and aid stations change the effort required for the same clock pace. Keep the finish goal fixed only when the conditions and training evidence still support it.
